1. About us
These Terms & Conditions apply to all products and services offered by No Black Boxes, operating under Voight-Kampff Limited, a company registered in England and Wales. Our registered address is 31 Oval Road, Second Floor North End Office, London, NW1 7EA, United Kingdom.
By purchasing a product or registering for a course, you agree to these terms.
2. Kit purchases
The NB3 Kit is a physical hardware package sold at £670 (UK and Europe, shipping included) or £690 (rest of world, including £20 shipping). Prices are stated in British Pounds Sterling and include VAT where applicable.
- Payment is processed securely via Stripe. We do not store your payment card details.
- Orders are fulfilled once payment is confirmed. We aim to dispatch within 5–10 working days.
- Shipping times vary by destination. We are not responsible for delays caused by customs or third-party carriers.
- You will receive an email confirmation when your order is placed and when it is dispatched.
The NB3 Kit is intended for educational use. It contains electronic components including small parts, it is not suitable for children under 15.
3. Returns and refunds
Change of mind returns
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you have the right to cancel your order within 14 days of receiving your kit, provided the box is unopened and the kit is in its original condition.
- To request a return, email info@noblackboxes.org within 14 days of delivery
- You are responsible for the cost of return shipping
- Once we receive and inspect the returned item, we will issue a full refund of the kit price within 14 days
- We cannot accept returns of opened kits unless they are faulty
Faulty or damaged items
If your kit arrives damaged or contains a manufacturing defect, contact us within 30 days of delivery. We will arrange a replacement or full refund at no cost to you, in accordance with the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
The curriculum
The No Black Boxes curriculum is open source and freely available to everyone at no cost. There is no separate charge for the curriculum, the £670 purchase price covers the physical hardware kit only. There is therefore no refund applicable to the curriculum.
4. Courses
No Black Boxes offers three course tracks: Build a Brain (ages 15–18), the No Black Boxes Intensive (ages 18+), and the Experimental Neuroscience Bootcamp (researchers and PhD students).
Applications and selection
Places on guided courses are limited and subject to an application process. Submission of an application does not guarantee a place. We select based on motivation and suitability, not prior technical experience.
Course fees
Where a course fee applies, it will be stated clearly at the time of application. Payment is required to secure your place.
Cancellations by participants
- Cancellations made more than 30 days before the course start date: full refund
- Cancellations made 14–30 days before the course start date: 50% refund
- Cancellations made fewer than 14 days before the course start date: no refund
Cancellations by No Black Boxes
In the unlikely event that we must cancel a course, we will notify all registered participants as soon as possible and offer a full refund or a place on a future course.
Online courses
Online courses are delivered via live video sessions and recorded lectures. Recordings may be made available to participants for a limited period after the course. By participating, you consent to being present in a recorded session.
5. Age restrictions and parental consent
The NB3 Kit contains electronic components and is not suitable for children under 15.
The Build a Brain course is open to students aged 15–18. Participants under 18 must have the explicit consent of a parent or guardian to register. By completing registration on behalf of a minor, the parent or guardian confirms they consent to the young person's participation and to the processing of their personal data as described in our Privacy Policy.
We take our duty of care to young participants seriously. Any safeguarding concerns should be reported to us immediately at info@noblackboxes.org.
6. Intellectual property
The No Black Boxes curriculum is open source and published under an open licence. You are free to use, adapt, and share it for non-commercial educational purposes, with attribution.
The No Black Boxes name, logo, and website design are the intellectual property of Voight-Kampff Limited. You may not use them without our written permission.
By submitting a final project for certification, you retain full ownership of your work. You grant No Black Boxes a non-exclusive licence to feature your project on our website and share it with our network of partners, for the purposes of recognition and promotion.
7. Acceptable use
When using our website or participating in our courses, you agree not to:
- Use our platform for any unlawful purpose
- Harass, intimidate, or discriminate against other participants or staff
- Share course materials in a way that violates their licence terms
- Misrepresent your identity or qualifications in an application
- Attempt to disrupt or interfere with our website or systems
We reserve the right to remove any participant from a course without refund if they breach these terms.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, No Black Boxes and Voight-Kampff Limited shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential loss arising from your use of our products or services.
Our total liability to you for any claim arising from a purchase shall not exceed the amount you paid for the relevant product or service.
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by law.
The NB3 Kit contains electronic components. You are responsible for using them safely and in accordance with the curriculum instructions.
9. Certification and recognition
A No Black Boxes certificate is awarded to participants who complete the curriculum and submit an acceptable final project. The certificate confirms completion — it is not an accredited qualification and does not carry academic credit.
We reserve the right to decline to issue a certificate where a submission does not meet the minimum standard, or where these terms have been breached.
Outstanding projects are reviewed annually by our independent committee and ranked. Top-ranked projects may be featured on our website and shared directly with our global network of research institutes, labs, and companies. This may include introductions for internship or career opportunities. We make no guarantee of any specific outcome, but we are committed to actively connecting exceptional work with the right people.
Ranking decisions are made at our sole discretion.
10. Safeguarding
No Black Boxes is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all participants, particularly young people. We expect all participants, teaching assistants, and staff to treat each other with respect.
Any concerns about the safety or welfare of a young person during a No Black Boxes course should be reported immediately to info@noblackboxes.org. We will respond promptly and, where necessary, involve relevant authorities.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising from these terms or from your use of our products and services shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
